POSTIVE PRACTICE

The behavior therapist's dream is to identify a tactic that reduces or eliminates behaviors and that has the following three characteristic :

  • it produces strong
  • immediate
  • lasting changes.
Here is a procedures that can make your classroom or students interesting to study on that day. :)

  1. Define that target behaviors. For the child in the study there were two : inappropriate hand and foot movements.
The hand movements included frequent contact with nose, mouth, or eyes; putting his hands inside his pants; repetitively moving his hand back and forth or up and down in the air; tossing objects; clapping his hands; rubbing or scratching his face; and rubbing his index finger and thumb together in circular motion.
The inappropriate foot movements included repetitive jumping, hoping, or gliding, and putting his feet above his body when lying with his stomach flat on floor.
  2. Remind the child what he or she doing,  (eg."You are rubbing in your face")
  3. Begin training for 2 1/2 minutes. During that time, provide instructions on the alternate behaviors the child is to perform. In example study, to diminish the inappropriate hand movements, the boy was instructed to move his hand in one of five positions :
    • above his head
    • straight out in front
    • put together
    • placed at his side
    • behind his back
  4. Each behavior, should be requested time during the treatment and should be held for 15 seconds. If the child does not follow one of the commands within 2 seconds, physically prompt him or her.
