'Classroom focus in the 1st 5 minutes of the day'

Carol Ross (1994), bukunya Making Your Classroom Work-Tried and True Organization and Management Strategies,

That 1st five minutes of the day, Train yourself to be at the door of your classroom to greet the students when they arrived. The settling influence and welcoming atmosphere you create will be worth the extra little bit of effort. A few 'spontaneous' personal comments to individuals as they pass through the door can really make a difference as to how students start the day :

"Did you have a good sleep?"
"That look likes a new haircut"

At the beginning of each month, establish 'Classroom Focus' as part of your routine. This become the first task of the day. You can try any number of monthly topics :

  • RINGO (Reading Is Now Going On)
  • Response Journals
  • Creative Thinking
  • Logical Thinking
  • Personal Spelling Lists
  • Paired Reading
